Reflection and Accountability.

I wanted to explain about the importance of self-reflection and accountability and how it is used in counselling.

Each person's journey through counselling is unique. There are two significant components within the counselling process that produce meaningful change. These are reflection and accountability.

Self-reflection allows a person to gain a deeper understanding of their thoughts, feelings, emotions and interactions with others. Being open and honest during this process, creates an awareness of fears and challenges in life.

Accountability is an essential part of the healing process. The counselling process helps clients to take responsibility for their thoughts, behaviours and reactions. Gaining a better understanding of what is out of their control, what is within their control and their reactions to challenges faced, can be empowering and promote growth and change.

Personal growth increases motivation. This motivation fuels a commitment to set and achieve goals which provides purpose in life.

Therapists have a responsibility to their clients (I use self-reflection and accountability too) Self-awareness and understanding allows me to challenge myself to become more authentic, this is something that I know will be forever changing to help my own growth.

Personally, I have always had a good level of self-awareness and used self-reflection. My counselling process and journey through becoming a qualified counsellor enhanced these skills. I reflect on my life and those close to me every day, I practice gratitude more than ever, that isn't me saying my life is always a bed of roses because sometimes we can go through so much shit but all of this shit is a lesson to learn and we find ways to get through it in the best way we can.
